The field guide

Look up.
Look after your eyes.

Safe viewing starts before the first contact. Follow established solar-observing guidance and the instructions for your equipment.

During the partial phases

Use suitable solar viewers that comply with ISO 12312-2 and come from a trustworthy supplier. Ordinary sunglasses are not a substitute. Check viewers for damage before use and supervise children.

Cameras, binoculars and telescopes

These need appropriate solar filters secured to the front of the optics. Never look through unfiltered optics while wearing eclipse glasses: concentrated sunlight can damage the viewer and your eyes. Seek advice from an experienced solar-observing supplier.

The brief total phase

Only inside the path, while the Sun is completely covered, is direct viewing without a solar viewer appropriate. Replace protection before any bright part of the Sun reappears. At a partial-only location, protection stays on throughout.

Prepare in advance

Read the full NASA guidance, understand your local contact times and attend the viewing briefing. If you are unsure about the phase or your equipment, keep protection in place.
