The field guide

Why a 98 Percent Partial Eclipse Is Not Totality

A 98 percent partial eclipse is not almost the same as totality. The uncovered solar photosphere remains intensely bright, the sky does not become fully dark and the solar corona does not appear.

What the remaining solar sliver does

Even a narrow uncovered part of the Sun produces enough light to keep the landscape visibly illuminated. The light may become strangely sharp, temperatures can fall and shadows may look unusual, but the experience remains a partial eclipse.

Solar filters must stay on during every partial phase. They can be removed only during totality, when the photosphere is completely covered, and must go back on as soon as totality ends.

What changes at 100 percent

Inside totality, the last direct sunlight disappears, the corona surrounds the dark Moon and the horizon can resemble twilight in every direction. Bright planets or stars may become visible and the change happens within seconds.

That qualitative threshold is why a traveler in Fes, Rabat or Casablanca needs to move into the path rather than accept a high obscuration percentage.

How to choose a totality destination

Select a location comfortably inside the path, not directly on the southern limit. Compare duration, weather, horizon and transport together. A well-organized tour should make this distinction explicit and identify the exact viewing region.
