The field guide

Morocco or Spain for the 2027 Solar Eclipse?

Morocco offers a high morning Sun, long totality in the north and the opportunity to build the eclipse into a wider journey. Spain offers different infrastructure and viewing regions, but the best choice depends on weather flexibility, travel priorities and the exact path location.

Why choose Morocco

Across northern Morocco, the Sun is roughly 38 to 42 degrees high at maximum, which is easier to observe than an eclipse close to the horizon. Tangier, Tetouan, the Rif and the Oriental region create several distinct bases along the path.

Morocco Eclipse is designed for visitors who want the astronomy and the journey organized together, with local transport and a weather decision plan.

The weather question

Morocco's Mediterranean coast has a documented marine-stratus concern. The value is not a claim that Morocco is always clearer, but the availability of inland and eastern alternatives across a long corridor.

Spain has its own regional weather differences. Compare specific sites and forecasts rather than national averages.

Time zones and border planning

Morocco returned to GMT (UTC+0) on 20 September 2026. Spain, including Ceuta and Melilla, uses CEST (UTC+2) in August 2027. Always include the time zone in travel instructions and reconfirm it before departure.

Do not combine both countries in an eclipse-morning crossing plan. Stay on the same side of the border as the selected viewing site from the night before.
